Maui: Beaches, Banana Bread & Unforgettable Adventures
After a few adventure-filled days on Kauaʻi, we boarded our flight to Maui, the island that started this entire trip idea in the first place.
Friends of ours own a vacation rental on Maui, and visiting their condo was actually the original reason this Hawaii trip came together. Once we started planning, the trip grew into three islands, but Maui remained the heart of the trip, and it ended up being the perfect place to slow down, explore, eat incredible food, and wrap up our Hawaiian adventure.
Our Home on Maui
For our time on Maui, we stayed in a three-bedroom vacation rental, which worked perfectly for our group of five. The condo quickly became more than just a place to sleep. We used it as our home base for beach days, Road to Hana, snorkeling, shopping, and slower mornings with coffee on the lanai. The views overlooking the golf course and ocean were beautiful, and the sunsets from the property were one of our favorite parts of the stay.
After checking in and unpacking, we headed to Safeway for groceries. Since we were staying on Maui longer than the other islands, we stocked up on breakfast items, snacks, drinks, and lunch foods. This was convenient and helped us save money, but we also relearned an important lesson: don't grocery shop hungry. We definitely bought more than we needed.

Settling Into Island Life
Our first full day on Maui was exactly what we needed: a beach day.
We went to Ulua Beach, and while the weather was cloudy and the water felt a little chilly without the sun, it was still a great day. The beach was not overly crowded, and after several days of flights, excursions, and moving between islands, it felt good to simply enjoy the ocean.
That evening, we had dinner at Maui Brewing Company, which ended up being one of our favorite casual meals on Maui. The food was delicious, the beer was great, and the atmosphere was fun with live music and a unique indoor space. We also had an unexpected visit from the resident cat roaming around the restaurant, very interested in everyone's food when it arrived. It gave us a laugh and made the evening even more memorable.
Road to Hana
Road to Hana was one of the days we were most excited about, and one of the days we learned the most from.
We had a full itinerary planned, including Keʻanae Arboretum, Aunty Sandy's Banana Bread, Upper Waikani Falls, Hamoa Beach, Wailua Falls, the Seven Sacred Pools, Pipiwai Trail, and Waimoku Falls.
The day was absolutely worth it, but our biggest takeaway is simple: leave earlier than you think you need to.
We didn't get on the road until around 8:30 a.m., which meant we were driving back in the dark. That part of the day was nerve-wracking, especially after already spending so many hours on winding roads. If we did it again, we would leave earlier and give ourselves more daylight for the return drive.
Even with that lesson learned, Road to Hana was incredible.
Keʻanae Arboretum gave us a chance to see the famous rainbow eucalyptus trees, which were even more colorful and unique in person. Aunty Sandy's Banana Bread was a must-stop, and yes, buy extra. You will thank yourself later. Upper Waikani Falls and Wailua Falls gave us beautiful waterfall views along the way, while Hamoa Beach was a peaceful stop before the biggest adventure of the day.
The highlight for us was the Kīpahulu District, where we visited the Seven Sacred Pools and hiked the Pipiwai Trail to Waimoku Falls. The bamboo forest was beautiful, the trail felt like a true adventure, and reaching Waimoku Falls made the long day feel completely worthwhile.

💡 Windows of Travel Tip: If the Road to Hana is on your itinerary, start early, and keep to a time limit for your stops. Even if you are used to packed travel days like we are, this is one day where extra daylight makes a big difference.
Molokini & Turtle Town Snorkeling
The next day brought another major Maui adventure: snorkeling at Molokini Crater and Turtle Town with Calypso Tours.
We spent quite a bit of time comparing snorkeling tours before booking. Since part of our group is prone to seasickness, we liked that Calypso used a larger boat with onboard bathrooms and more space to move around. We also appreciated the longer tour duration and later departure time.
The boat was comfortable, the crew was fantastic, and the food selections were very good. The snorkeling itself was incredible. The water clarity at Molokini Crater was breathtaking, and seeing the reef below so clearly was an unforgettable experience.
Our second stop at Turtle Town was equally memorable. Seeing sea turtles in their natural habitat was one of those moments that remind you exactly why Hawaii is so special.
The only stressful part happened before departure. Scott cannot go underwater without earplugs. We accidentally forgot them and were told over the phone that earplugs were available onboard, only to find out at check-in that they were not. Thankfully, we asked again before boarding and had just enough time to jog to a nearby store and make it back before departure.
Even with that hiccup, the tour itself was excellent and one we would absolutely recommend.

Mama's Fish House
After a morning of snorkeling, we had dinner planned for one of the meals we had been looking forward to most: Mama's Fish House.
Scott made our reservation nearly six months in advance because he knew how quickly it books up, and we are so glad he did. Our reservation was at 7:15 p.m., which ended up being a beautiful time to enjoy the sunset and evening ocean breeze.
From the moment we arrived, the entire experience felt special. The setting was gorgeous, the service was exceptional, and every bite of food lived up to the hype. The seafood was incredibly fresh, the drinks were excellent, and the Polynesian Black Pearl dessert was unforgettable.
This was not just dinner. It was an experience, and it became one of the highlights of our entire trip.

Shopping, Souvenirs & a Maui Luau
The next day started with a local farmers' market. It was smaller than expected, with only a handful of booths, but we still found some great deals.
We also stopped at Kihei Kalama Village, which ended up being a great find for souvenir shopping. Yes, it is touristy, but it has a little bit of everything. This is also where we spotted South Shore Tiki Lounge, which we mentally bookmarked for another night, and found CocoNene, one of our favorite souvenir stops from the trip.
That evening, we attended the Te Au Moana Luau at the Wailea Beach Marriott Resort.
We underestimated how long it would take to park and walk through the resort to the luau grounds, so we arrived later than planned and missed some of the pre-show activities. If you book this luau, plan to arrive earlier than you think you need to.
The food was good, though not the most memorable part of the evening. The real highlight was the performance. The storytelling, music, and dancing were beautiful, engaging, and captivating. The oceanfront setting was stunning, though we did wish there had been a few moments built into the schedule to enjoy the sunset before the show began.
Overall, we are glad we experienced it, and the performance was absolutely the highlight.

Rainy Day Changes & Lahaina
Our next day was supposed to be a beach day, but Hawaii had other plans. It rained almost the entire day, and after a failed beach attempt, we adjusted.
Instead of forcing the original plan, we drove up the coast toward Lahaina to see the area and the progress being made after the devastating fires. We were able to sit on the beach for about 15 minutes before the rain started again, but even that short stop was meaningful.
One thing we've learned over the years is that not every travel day goes according to plan, and that's okay. Sometimes changing the plan leads to experiences you weren't expecting, and this was a good reminder to leave room for flexibility, especially in a destination where the weather can shift quickly.
That evening, we went to South Shore Tiki Lounge, the spot we had noticed while shopping earlier in the trip. It ended up being a great choice, with live music, friendly staff, good drinks, and food we really enjoyed.
Our Last Full Day on Maui
For our final full day, we got up early and headed to Polo Beach.
The beach itself was beautiful, with lava rock borders and large waves that made for a fun morning in the water. The tide came up quite high, and by early afternoon, there was not much beach left. We also noticed the surf warning flag as we were leaving, which was a good reminder to always check beach conditions before getting in the water.
After cleaning up, we returned to Kihei Kalama Village for last-minute souvenir shopping before heading to dinner at Moose McGillycuddy's.
Moose McGillycuddy's ended up being such a fun final dinner. The location offered great beach views, the food and drinks were good, and we arrived during happy hour. The best part of the night, though, was bingo. It made dinner feel more interactive, and I even got BINGO and won a prize!
It was a lighthearted, fun way to wrap up our last full day in Hawaii.
Departure Day
Our flight home wasn't until 8:30 p.m., so we still had almost a full day on Maui.
We spent the morning packing, then enjoyed a few hours at the pool in our rental complex before heading toward the airport. On the way, we stopped at Fred's Mexican Cafe for one last meal.
As luck would have it, we were there on Taco Tuesday. The tacos were fresh and flavorful, the chips and salsa were delicious, and the beach views made it a great final lunch before starting the long journey home.
It was hard to believe that thirteen days, three islands, countless meals, several excursions, and so many unforgettable views had already come and gone.
Our Thoughts on Maui
Maui was the perfect island to end our trip.
It gave us some of our biggest adventures, including Road to Hana, Molokini, Turtle Town, and the luau, but it also gave us space to relax. Beach days, sunset views from the lanai, souvenir shopping, and slow mornings at the condo balanced out the busier parts of the itinerary.
What stood out most was the variety. In just one island, we experienced beaches, waterfalls, bamboo forests, snorkeling, incredible food, scenic drives, and cultural performances. Maui gave us a little bit of everything.
Even with a few rainy moments and lessons learned along the way, our time on Maui was unforgettable.
